OEM BMW Belts, Pulleys & Brackets

The belts in your BMW car or SAV help to move many parts in many systems. Tas a matter of fact, the more parts and systems your vehicle has, the more belts it employs.

The Three Types of Belts

The timing belt connects your crankshaft to your camshaft, allowing them to move in sync and preventing parts from clanging into each other. If your BMW is newer, though, it probably has a timing chain instead of a timing belt. That's good, since a timing chain is more durable and lasts longer.

Serpentine belts work with the idler pulley, tensioner, and crank pulley to move parts such as the alternator and power steering.

Drive belts, which are also called V-belts, run off of the crank pulley's movement and manage parts like the water pump, radiator fan, and more.

If a timing belt breaks, you'll know it right away as your engine will stop running. You may have more time to fix the problem when serpentine or drive belts go bad, but you'll still want to address the issue ASAP.

How to Spot Bad Belts

It's a good idea to examine your belts on a regular schedule in order to confirm that they're in good working order. Warning signs include:

  • Frayed belt edges
  • Cracked belt material
  • Belts that hang too loosely
  • Belts that have been tightened too much

When to Replace Your Belts

Your owner's manual has your recommended maintenance schedule. Generally, timing belts need to be replaced somewhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. However, a timing chain can be expected to work for your engine's lifetime.

Check your serpentine and drive belts for cracks and shallow grooves after around 60,000 miles; you should expect to replace them before you hit 90,000 miles.
